I was born in Sri Lanka to parents who, in 1973, made the courageous decision to leave their homeland in search of a better life in the UK. Leaving behind a tropical paradise they had always known, they arrived in Essex having never seen snow, armed with just £300, education, and determination.
My father, a dedicated doctor, served the Thurrock community as a GP for over 40 years, while my mother, a barrister, instilled in me the values of perseverance and integrity. Life in the 1970s brought challenges—we faced racism, verbal abuse, and even physical intimidation—but my parents taught me to stand tall and never lose sight of who we were.
School became my bridge into British society. I made lifelong friends, introducing them to the fiery flavours of Sri Lankan curries, while also embracing British traditions. My heritage remained close to my heart, celebrated at community events filled with music, saris, and the warmth of shared culture.
Even today, I uphold Sri Lankan traditions. On New Year’s Day, I prepare milk rice, boil milk for prosperity, and share our customs with my children. My legal career is part of a proud family legacy—three generations of lawyers on my mother’s side—and I am honoured to be the first to build a firm here in the UK.
