Today, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced key proposals to tighten the UK’s immigration system, with the aim of reducing overall migration figures “significantly.” These proposed changes, if implemented, could impact a wide range of visa applicants, their families, and employers across the UK.
What Has Been Announced?
All individuals applying for UK visas – including adult dependants – would be required to pass an English language test. This is a major shift that could affect family visas, skilled worker routes, and partner applications.
Migrants may need to spend 10 years in the UK before becoming eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). This change could delay pathways to permanent residency and British citizenship for many.
The government plans to reduce the reliance on international recruitment in the adult social care sector. This proposal has already raised concerns from care sector employers who rely heavily on overseas staff to meet staffing demands.
At T.G. Collins Solicitors, we understand that immigration rules are constantly evolving — and that today’s announcement may raise questions or concerns about your current visa, future applications, or your ability to remain in the UK long-term.
These announcements reflect the government’s intention — but no changes have come into force yet. However, early preparation is key. Whether you’re applying now or planning ahead, seeking legal advice can ensure your journey is not disrupted.

EXCELLENT Based on 262 reviews Posted on CamranTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. T.G. Collins Solicitors were excellent as the conveyancers, in the sale of my apartment. I cannot recommend Calum highly enough, as he ensured the sale completed in ~3 months, despite a large number of enquiries that were received from the other side.Posted on Mark StockTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Done work quickly with very good communication. I would use again.Posted on Jenny TullisTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My partner sold his property recently and Calum acted in the sale. There were a couple of hiccups that cropped up but these were all dealt with and sorted. Calum was always available on the phone and, if not, returned calls quickly. Would recommend TG Collins and thanks, Calum, for pushing the sale through to completion.Posted on Claire SteffTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. T G Collins (Calum in particular) was incredible throughout the sale of my property. He kept me fully informed and got back to me extremely quickly for a very speedy transaction. Highly recommend. Thank you ☺️Posted on Leighton HeadTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I couldn’t recommend Jigy at TG Collins enough, no question was left unanswered and no request too much. Very diligent and efficient service. Thanks again.Posted on Neil HealeyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I sent a conveyancing quote enquiry online to this firm then after 2-days with zero response I rang them on Friday 13 March 2026 and was told no-one free to talk to me but someone would call me back by 5.30pm... shock horror1.... no-one ever called back. Such poor service; probably a sign. Accepted a quote from another firm on Duke Street, Chelsmford. Would not recommend this firm in my experience as really poor service.Posted on Mark de RozarioTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Would highly recommend Chloe and this company. Chloe has been on the ball all the way through. Her communication has been excellent. This is the second dealing we have asked TG Collins to act on for us. Would not hesitate to use again.Posted on Darren de RozarioTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Thank you for sorting everything out so efficiently and nicely for us. Chloe Golding, you are amazing and you will go far. I have this morning recommended you to a colleague and I’ll be in touch if she decides to go ahead thank youDarren de RozarioPosted on Stephen ProleTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I used to work as a mortgage adviser and have dealt with many conveyancers over the years and it was very difficult to remember a good one! I decided in the end to choose these guys based on cost and reviews and was glad I did. My sale was a bit complex and the buyer's solicitor was useless but Mafruha, Mindi and Calum worked efficiently to get it over the line.
